This Little Piggy....

HAD PIGLETS!!!

Meet Bing, our New Zealand KuneKune Pig. Bing has been an amazing addition to our farm. For those of you who are not familiar with Kunekune pigs, they are a small breed of domestic pig originating from New Zealand. They are incredibly friendly, beautiful, well behaved, easy to train, good grazers and very intelligent. They are a slow growing breed and can stay smaller for longer than most pigs. KuneKune means "Fat and Round" in the Maori Language. Their average height fully grown, is about 24 inch.

Bing lives up to all of those characteristics for sure! She is the such a sweet girl, she loves belly rubs and will sit pretty for Oreo Cookies (or any treat really LOL). You can't help but smile every time you see her strut across the farm and come on... who doesn't love that adorable little underbite and snout of hers!

The Piglets are coming! The Piglets Are Coming!

On Friday, August 20, 2021 Bing had her first litter of piglets. This was a first for us as well! This was our first time ever having pigs on our farm let alone breeding them, we had a lot of learning to do. Thankfully we picked this particular breed because it has made learning so much easier. She had a great birth with no complications! She had 5 boys and 1 girl! With all new farm experiences comes trial and error. We found out what works and what doesn't when it comes to helping Bing care for her new bundles of joy.

Raising Farm Animals is Not Always Rainbows and Unicorns.....

The first night we had the piglets and Bing in a pen that was separated by a small gate and we were going out every 2 hours to help supervise them nursing with her. Unfortunately, one of the little boys had wedged himself in between the gate and the stall. Bing had tried to push him back through but ended up hurting him unintentionally. My husband and I tried everything we could to save him, but he succumbed to his injuries. We were devastated and felt so terrible for momma Bing and the piglet. It was a learning experience for us. My husband and I immediately made adjustments and he built a more piglet proof enclosure for Bing and the piglets. The remaining 5 piglets are doing great and Bing is in love.
